2026 Hailed as the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming appears especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.

Should these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
