Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's lawyer entered the plea on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer announced he would attempt to have the proceedings thrown out for various reasons including that his the accused, a critic of former President Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was indicted shortly after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they planned to submit various legal requests to terminate the proceedings before a court case, stating the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

Mr Comey's proceedings was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into an additional political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

The former director seemed in good spirits as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the magistrate read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he told the judge.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's first administration as national leader. At the period, he was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were never brought, causing disapproval from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government claim James Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the Senate by stating he had not permitted an individual at the agency to disclose to news outlets information about the government examinations.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, obstruct and impede" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

In a video James Comey posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "dictator".

"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."

The accusations against James Comey surfaced after Donald Trump posted on online platforms demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and others.
