The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Romance

Throughout this animated adventure for preteens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous creature he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be entitled sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.

Naturally, such a setup needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
